Three Methods How To Increase Terpenes In Cannabis Infusions

Enhancing Terpenes in Your Cannabis Infusion: A Guide

What up, my fam? Hope you're doing well. If it's your first time tuning in, we chat all types of infusions—cannabis, a little science, and a lot of good vibes. Today, we're diving into how to increase the overall terpenes in your cannabis infusion. For those new to the term, terpenes are compounds that provide much of the aroma and flavor in cannabis. They're also known to work synergistically with cannabinoids to enhance your experience. Think of cannabinoids as the car and terpenes as the steering wheel that directs your experience.

Lower Temperature Decarboxylation

One effective method to boost your terpene content is to adjust your decarboxylation process. Typically, we recommend decarbing your flower at 240 degrees Fahrenheit for about 40 minutes. However, to preserve more terpenes, you might want to consider lowering the temperature to between 200 and 220 degrees Fahrenheit and extend the time to about 50 minutes. The rationale here is straightforward: the higher the temperature, the more terpenes evaporate. By lowering the temperature, you minimize the loss of these aromatic compounds, maintaining the flavor and potential therapeutic benefits.

Skip Decarboxylation

Another approach is to skip the decarboxylation step altogether. Simply add your raw flower directly to your fat source, such as oil or butter, and infuse it. When using this method, keep the infusion temperature low—around 160 to 175 degrees Fahrenheit—and allow it to infuse slowly, typically for three to four hours. It's crucial to note that while this method helps preserve terpenes, the potency might be lower since decarboxylation is key to converting THCA into the psychoactive THC.

Active/Passive Infusion Technique

Lastly, my personal favorite and a technique I've been experimenting with for years is what I call the active/passive infusion. Here’s how it works: if I'm using an ounce of cannabis, I'll decarb 21 grams at 240 degrees Fahrenheit for 40 minutes. I place the decarbed cannabis in a Mason jar and then add 7 grams of fresh, raw flower right after the decarbed cannabis has cooled. This combination of activated and non-activated bud creates a dynamic duo where the decarbed cannabis ensures potency, while the fresh cannabis boosts the terpene profile. After combining both, I add the oil or butter and infuse it at about 160 to 175 degrees Fahrenheit for three to four hours. This method is fantastic because it strikes a balance between potency and flavor, enhancing the overall quality of the infusion.

These techniques are just a few ways to think about when you aim to increase the terpene content in your cannabis infusions.
